At Hireup, the safety of our community is our top priority. Because many of our support workers use their own vehicles to support clients (commonly known as "Grey Fleet"), we want to ensure that every journey is as safe as possible.
During 2025, Hireup participated in research being conducted by the National Road Safety Partnership Program (NRSPP) and Monash University. As part of this research, Hireup also joined a Grey Fleet Working Group. This collaboration brings together industry experts and researchers to set a new gold standard for road safety at work.
To understand the unique challenges of transport in our community, we participated in a comprehensive, evidence-based review conducted by Monash University. This process included:
- Literature Review: A deep dive into global best practices and academic research regarding grey fleet safety.
- Employee Surveys: Workers provided feedback through two surveys, one at the beginning of the research and another after 12 months. The survey results demonstrated improvement across three areas - vehicle registration checks, insurance checks and drivers licence checks which aligned with system improvements Hireup implemented over the course of the research.
- Findings Report: These insights were compiled into a formal report that identified key areas where Hireup could strengthen its safety safeguards.
What’s Changing?
Following the recommendations from the Monash University review, we are implementing several key updates to ensure our transport practices are robust and transparent.
- Updated 'Providing Safe Transport' Policy: We have refined our Providing Safe Transport Policy to be clearer and more comprehensive. Key updates include stronger definitions of driver responsibilities and clearer guidelines on insurance requirements.
- Enhanced Vehicle Inspection Templates: Safety starts before the engine does so we’ve updated our vehicle inspection checklist to help workers and clients quickly verify that a car is ready and safe to drive.
- Audits of Transport Policy Compliance: To ensure these high standards are maintained across the platform, Hireup is introducing proactive compliance audits. This means we will periodically review documentation (such as registration, insurance, and service history) and check that transport shifts are being conducted in alignment with our updated policy.
What does this mean for you?
For Support Workers: You may notice new prompts to update your vehicle details or complete a quick digital "pre-start" check. These are designed to protect you and your passengers.
For Clients: You can have greater peace of mind knowing that the workers you book are supported by a research-backed safety framework.
