What is a Sleepover Shift?
A sleepover shift is a booking of 12 hours, made up of 8 hours of sleep and 4 hours of support before and/or after sleeping.
During the 8 hours of sleep, as a support worker, you are not expected to be woken, except for (up to) two hours of assistance where required during the night.
Sleepover Shift Breakdown:
8 hours of sleep
During the 8 hours of sleep, as a support worker, you are not expected to be woken, except for (up to) two hours of assistance where required during the night.
The rate charged for the sleep component of the booking is for the whole 8 hour block (not per hour).
1 hour of assistance during sleep
When we calculate your payslip, we assume that this hour of support during the night is provided towards the beginning of the sleep period (e.g. if your Client slept from 10pm on Wednesday to Thursday 6am, we assume any support during the night would have been on Wednesday before midnight).
2nd hour of assistance during sleep
If you are woken up for up to 2 hours during the night, there is an option to charge for a 2nd hour of active support. We assume that this 2nd hour of support occurs towards the end of the sleep period (so in the above example, Thursday morning before you wake up at 6am).
If the 2nd hour of assistance during the night was in fact towards the beginning of your sleep, please email payroll@hireup.com.au so we can correct this in your payslip.
If more than 2 hours of support is required during the sleeping block then the booking will need to be cancelled and rebooked as an active overnight booking by your Client.
Additional 4 hours of Support
The 4 hours of support booked either side of the 8 hour sleepover is charged at the relevant daily/hourly rate.
As a Client, you are not obligated to book a worker for the full additional 4 hours of support, i.e. you can book less than that on the platform. However, we will still charge you for 4 hours of support, as this is a minimum payment requirement outlined by the SCHADS industry award. These hours are called sleepover compliance hours. These are hours that are not technically worked but are paid to meet the 12 hour requirement.
For flexibility around when the additional 4 hours of support can take place, your worker may choose to sign an Individual Flexibility Agreement (IFA) with us as the employer. It provides flexibility to clauses in SCHADS. By signing the IFA, you and your worker will be able to split the 4 hours and book them before and/or after the sleepover, for example 2 hours before, 2 hours after, instead of 4 consecutive hours.
Please note that your support worker is not obligated to sign an IFA.
As with all bookings on Hireup, the platform will calculate the cost of the sleepover shift. Once you fill in the hours, the cost breakdown will appear.
(note: If you are a Support Worker who wishes to continue working sleepover shifts, you will have to sign an IFA in order to work those hours flexibly.)
What Do I need to Provide for my Workers on a Sleepover Booking
In accordance with the SCHADS award you must provide the following for your Support Workers attending sleepover bookings:
- a separate room with a bed and clean linen,
- the use of appropriate facilities (including access to food preparation facilities and staff facilities where these exist), and
- free board and lodging.

How do I create a sleepover booking?
To comply with the SCHADS award, all sleepover bookings are required to be 12 hours. You can book and have your Support Worker work less than 12 hours, however, we will charge you sleepover compliance hours for any hours not booked to make up the 12 hours.
To create a sleepover booking:
- Log into the platform
- Once you’ve decided who you’d like to work with, you can book them via their profile or a message. If you’ve worked with this person before, you can book them through 'your team' on the right hand side of your Dashboard.
- Request a booking by entering: start date, start time and finish time
- Next, select 'yes' under the question: ‘Does this shift include a sleepover?’
- Pick a time you think you and your Support Worker will go to sleep (this can be an estimate). This will start the 8 hour sleep over component of the booking
- Review the booking times, and click 'Request Booking'
- The Support Worker will then confirm or decline your request
If you experience any difficulties with the sleepover bookings, please don’t hesitate to contact our Community Support Team for assistance.
