Introduction
We know that there may be instances and occasions where Support Workers will be required to support a Client in handling money.
When handling a Client’s money, Hireup requires all Support Workers to act in an honest, transparent and an accountable manner which is in the best interests of the person they are supporting.
Hireup Support Workers are not permitted to support Hireup Clients in the management of their financial affairs. Even though a Support Worker may have specific qualifications, experience or capabilities, for example bookkeeping, capacity to provide financial or investment advice, they’re not covered by Hireup insurance to provide support beyond the Support Worker job description.
Please contact Hireup on 02 9113 5933 or hello@hireup.com.au if you have questions or concerns in relation to handling money or financial affairs.
Money Handling Procedure
Consent and Agreement
Support Workers should only handle money if they have been granted express permission to do so by the person they are supporting or their Account Manager.
A written confirmation of the requirements should be shared between all parties to ensure that the expectations and guidelines are clear.
Budgets and Plans
Hireup recommends that a money handling plan or budget be developed and provided to any Support Workers who are required to handle money. This could include:
- Limitations on what the money can be spent on
- Daily/Weekly spending limits
- Who else might need to be involved in larger purchases
Record Keeping
Clients and Support Workers can agree to processes for recording the spending of money together. Hireup recommends that at a minimum, receipts should be kept for each transaction.
Security of cash/keycards/pins
Support Workers should ensure that they have secure processes for the management of keycards/pins or any cash that is being handled.
Support Worker Expenses
Clients should reimburse their Support Worker for additional expenses incurred during the shift, such as entry fees, transport costs, parking, etc.
This should be discussed between the Client and the Support Worker during the interview process so that clear expectations are set on items that will be reimbursed.
Support Workers will provide their own meals during a shift except in circumstances where the Support Worker is not able to do so because of the nature of the shift. This could include eating in a restaurant or extended shifts.
If this is the case, reimbursement may be necessary.
Currently, payment for additional expenses incurred during a shift will need to be managed by direct arrangement between the Support Worker and the Client.
